Garmin Forerunner 301, 201, 101

The Garmin Forerunner watches represent a leap forward in running technology. Currently there are 3 versions. The Forerunner 101, 201, and 301.
Garmin is traditionally known for its GPS products, and although the idea of tracking your longitude and latitude while you run isn't too interesting, the implications of the technology are very cool. The GPS functionality allows the forerunner watches to calculate your pace and your distance. This means that you can go to any arbitrary place and start running and see how far you have gone and at what pace--no more driving the routes with your car to measure the distance. Some great ways to use this functionality include to pace yourself in a qualifying run for the Boston Marathon or to beat a friend who you know runs at a given pace.

What the 3 units have in common:
-Measure speed, pace, distance, and calories burned
-Weigh 2.6-2.75 ounces

Here are how the 3 units differ:

Forerunner 101

-Takes 2 AAA batteries, 15 hours battery life
-No PC interface

Forerunner 201

-Rechargeable lithium ion batters, 15 hours batter life
-PC interface to save running data to your computer

Forerunner 301

-Takes 2 AAA batteries -PC interface to save running data to your computer
-Heart Rate monitor

When it comes to purchasing the watch, you can pay retail ($299) or you can shop smart. Currently you can buy the 301 on either eBay or Amazon for $175-200 on average.
