The Chicago MarathonThe Chicago Marathon will be held this year on Sunday, October 22, 2006. History of the Chicago MarathonIn November, 1976, five people got together and planned what would be the first Chicago Marathon. Little was accomplished that first year, but in 1977, Dr. Noel Nequin organized a race now known as the Ravenswood Bank Lakefront 10-Mile Run. Over 1,000 racers participated and it served as a milestone that indicated the popularity of running in Chicago. Chicago businessman Lee Flaherty agreed to have his company, Flair Communications, be the official sponsor of the Marathon. The marathon needed to be named still, so Dr. Nequin met with William Daley, son of the late Mayor Richard J. Daley, about naming the Marathon. Following the meeting, the Daley family gave its blessing to name the race the Mayor Daley Marathon. The first race had a $5 entry fee and started at 8 a.m. on September 25, 1977.Future race sponsors were Beatrice Foods, Old Style, and since 1994 it has been LaSalle Bank. In 1977, 4,200 runner turned out for the marathon. Such a high number qualified it for the title of largest marathon in the world.
